Moorea

After a short ferry ride, we arrived at Moorea. After everybody were taking a cab or had a pick up, we decided to be more adventurous, and we took the local bus to our hotel.

It was a beautiful bus ride along the coast and after 45 minutes we arrived at the hotel.

The hotel is a garden with 30 Polynesian style bungalows, all facing the ocean. The ocean is aqua blue and you can see the rays swim before the coast. And that is where Moorea is famous for, a lagoon full of sharks and rays.

After unpacking our stuff, we went into the water for a snorkeling trip. It didn’t take a minute before Guido spotted the first reef shark. And after snorkeling for half an hour, we already spotted 3 black tip reef sharks! It was wonderful and yet scary. I know, the sharks are not interested in you and they swim away from you…but still, I have seen Jaws, and that movie scared the whole nation when it comes to sharks.

So after 45 minutes I was happy I arrived to shore safely with all my fingers and toes still attached at my body.

The lagoon trip, the change of Islands, my dad’s birthday and the amount of cocktails, made us go a sleep late that night and the next morning we woke up with clouds in our head and in the sky.

The weather was just like I felt. Cloudy, cold and rainy. As the clouds moved away in my head, the clouds became darker in the sky and the wind got stronger. And last night we had our first tropical storm. It felt like a typical Dutch November night. It was cold, the rain made music on the roof and the wind blew so hard that the curtains moved with the windows closed. As it was such a late November night, I putted my shoe in front of the door and sang a Sinterklaas song. But, there was nothing in there this morning. I think, Moorea is a bit too far for Sinterklaas.

Paradise at the lagoon!

After some sweaty hours at the pool, we went for a afternoon snorkeling trip at the lagoon just across the road.

It was almost high tide and after we had crossed the road (it took us nearly 10 minutes) and Guido had found back his fins in the water, we set of half way to the reef drop.

First it started with dull seaweed but very quickly after that came all sorts of hard and soft coral with beautiful fish!

We were curious how it would be just before the reef drop , so we went al little bit further. And that adventure paid off! We saw a stingray, a blue-spotted eagle ray, a enormous mural eel and a sea snake (red, black, white colors) of approximately 2 meters! It was wonderful!

After playing a bit with the triggerfish we stepped out the lagoon to combat the road ones again.

It was a wonderful afternoon and this wasn’t the best site to snorkel / dive in French Polynesia / the pacific. So, I am really looking forward to explore more lagoons, reef drops, etc. !

La Plage

Na een week in en uit wat (te dure) hotels zitten we nu in een pension dat gaat onder de naam De La Plage. De bedoeling is dat we hier een dikke week blijven voordat we onze reis vervolgen naar Moorea. Nu we dus de tijd hebben om eindelijk eens iets voor ons zelf te doen is het ook tijd om eens terug te kijken naar een bewogen week. Velen van jullie zullen denken dat op een tropisch eiland het paradijs is maar niets is minder waar. Jetlag, dure hotels en levensgevaarlijk situaties zijn ons deel hier in Papeete. Ons pension dat gaat onder de idyllische naam La Plage heeft waarschijnlijk haar naam te danken aan een strand dat op een steenworp afstand hier vandaan ligt. Nu, strand mag je het eigenlijk niet noemen. Het is meer een mix van wat schelpgravel en basalt waar je ongemakkelijk op kan liggen als het eb is, tijdens vloed is er helemaal geen strand. Maar om er te komen moet je een levensgevaarlijke actie uitvoeren. Tussen ons pension en het strand loopt namelijk de hoofdweg van Tahiti waarover een eindeloze stroom auto’s rijdt. Niet één is er ooit van plan om dan ook maar ergens voor te stoppen. De enige manier om de andere zijde te bereiken is om op goed geluk ergens tussen de auto’s en vrachtwagens door te rennen en bidden dat je het redt. Eenmaal aan de andere kant aan gekomen is het gevaar nog niet geweken. Zoals op veel tropische eilanden staan ook hier kokospalmen en zoals iedereen weet groeien daar kokosnoten aan (op dure ressorts is dat om de één of andere reden niet het geval maar verder groeien die dingen overal). Het geval wil dat deze kokosnoten onderhevig zijn aan de zwaartekracht en dat zo nu en dan zo’n kokosnoot met grote snelheid naar beneden tuimelt. Dit alleen vormt al een bedreiging voor haar en aangezicht maar combineer dit met vrachtwagens en er ontstaat een, voor mij, volledig nieuw gevaar. Zo wilde het dat nadat we de weg veilig hadden geslecht we werden bestookt met kokosnoten die onder de banden van de vrachtwagens wegknalden. Misschien heeft iemand wel eens meegemaakt dat hij of zij in de herfst langs eikenbomen fietsten en dan over een eikeltje heenreed. Vaak gebeurt het dan dat dit eikeltje met grote kracht zijn heil weer gaat zoeken in het bos. Kokosnoten hebben de neiging om hetzelfde te doen als ze op de juiste manier onder de band van een vrachtwagen terecht komen. Dit zorgt dus voor levensgevaarlijke situaties en het gebeurt meer dan eens dat we dus na het oversteken van een onoversteekbare weg ons vege lijf moesten redden door weg te duiken voor inter-ballistische kokosnoten. Dit is slecht één van de weinige gevaren. Ook zijn er irritatiepunten. Daarvoor zou je kunnen zeggen, “Zet je eroverheen, je bent op vakantie”. Waar! Natuurlijk! Maar sommige dingen zijn echt onoverkomelijk. Bijvoorbeeld muggen, behoorlijk irritant. De malaria en dengue die deze met zich meebrengen zijn ook niet grappig. Maar het kan nog veel erger. Kippen, en dan met name de hanen. Misschien heeft iemand wel eens meegemaakt dat hij ’s ochtends wakker is gekraaid door een haan. Behoorlijk vervelend. Naar wordt het echter als een haan een andere haan wekt en dat ze het samen op een wedstrijdje kraaien zetten. Nu is er hier op Tahiti een fenomeen en laat ik het te veel hanen noemen. ’s Avonds als het donker wordt gaan de hanen op stok. Zo hoort het. ’s Ochtends als het licht wordt gaan de hanen kraaien. Zo hoort het. Nu is er echter niemand op het idee gekomen om dat de hanen hier te vertellen. ’s Avonds als het donker wordt gaan de hanen op stok, so far so good. Maar als er één haan maar zoveel als een vuurvlieg waar neemt interpreteerd hij dat als, “ochtend?” En slaat aan het kraaien, waarna de andere hanen denken, “ochtend?” en voor je het weet is elke haan op het eiland aan het kraaien geslagen. Het geval wil dat er bijna altijd wel ergens op het eiland een haan is die een glimp licht opvangt wat er in resulteert dat er overdag bijna geen haan te horen is maar dat gedurende de hele nacht er op het eiland een kakofonie van hanengekraai heerst. En zonet heeft een kind de neus gebroken van zijn of haar vader in het zwembad. Het op reis zijn gaat niet over rozen.

Bonjour!

Today it is Friday and it is time to leave Le Meridien. It was a wonderful hotel but it was also far above our budget.

Yesterday we had rented a car to explore the island and to look for nice and good valuable places to stay. It was a wonderful day with a lovely picnic on a beautiful beach! We also found out that most of the products they sell in the supermarket are from Dutch origin and that they also sell snert and bruine bonen!

Our search for a place to stay was less successful. We only found two options that met our requirements and both were fully booked. One of the two could offer us a room from Monday on.

When we arrived back in the hotel we only had to find a hotel for the weekend. But that didn’t went so easy as expected. All the hotels we had tried to call were fully booked or didn’t exist anymore. It was like being back in Corsica (LOL) where the same thing happened to us. So, we decided that the best thing to do was to book 3 more nights at Le Meridien, even when that meant it would cut a to big amount out of our budget. But when we were at the reception they told us the same story we had heard before…they were fully booked for the weekend!! Aaahhh!! And so we heard it is a national holiday this weekend and that is why all the hotels are fully booked. I hate national holidays!!!

Thank god, there was internet and bookings.com and we finally found ourselves a room at the Sofitel for the weekend! Still, too expensive but much better than having no place to stay.

So we are going to relax at a beautiful pool this weekend, doing nothing! What a horrible weekend!

Ia Orana!

Finally, after 38 hours of travelling, we have arrived at Tahiti!

Our transit in LA was horrible with 3 hours waiting for immigration, customs and check in! And our flight was fully booked with honeymooners what didn’t make the flight a big success. Thank god, Guido and I were too tired to bother and slept the whole flight.

Our arrival op Tahiti was great! As EU-citizens, we didn’t had to go through immigrations and therefore we were outside in no time! Unfortunally, Guido his flight bag was torn apart but that was the only downside.

At the airport was a lovely lady who brought us to the hotel, where we took a shower and a very large cup of coffee.

After doing some shopping at the supermarket, we sat down at the pool to relax…what a wonderful life!!

Tomorrow we are going to drive around the Island (in a Twingo!) to arrange our boat to Maupiti, do some more shopping and to find good places to stay!

Up, up and away!!

After a short night with maybe too much wine, the alarmclock went of very early! At 5 Am we were checking in and an hour later we said goodbye to our parents and went to our gate.
It is still funny, we still have the feeling that we are on a 3 week holiday. Maybe that will change after we touch down at Papeete!! But that will take another 30 hours or so!
Anyway, we are at Heathrow now waiting and waiting. At that gave me time to write.

I hope to write something from LA and otherwise you have to wait untill we arrived in Papeete!

Today we will publish our website! One day delayed but we had a malfunction yesterday. But that is now solved!
